Raising Maidens of Virtue
Over the last year, my daughters and I have valued the book Raising Maidens of Virtue by Stacy McDonald from Books on the Path. What sweet, memorable moments we have had reading the chapters together. Either as an early morning devotion on the couch or just before bed tucked under the covers, this book teaches several lessons that are key for young Christian ladies. As soon as we finished the last chapter in the book, we decided to start the book over again.
Actually, our favourite part of the book is the short story in Chapter 1 titled: “The Fence Dwellers.” In my opinion, I think this story would make a wonderful picture book to add to any Christian library. The setting takes place in a beautiful garden which is adjacent to an active rock quarry. Plants in the garden are personified as characters and the Gardener represents God. The message is an allegory for us as Christians to be set apart and embrace our calling to worship our creator by simply being who we. Presently, my girls are 9 and 11 years old. The worldly, pre-teen culture that exists outside our home aims to influence them to desire popularity, riches, beauty or fame. By emulating worldly models and behaviours, our daughters will gradually be swept up into the attention, slowly abandoning what God’s plan is for them according to their unique personality, design and gifts. I hope this story and devotional will encourage more Christian mothers and daughters as it did for us.

Included in each chapter are questions for further study and reflection as well as related scripture verses to look up. Hope you get a chance to at least read this story with your girls.
